Frequently asked questions

What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax is India's destination-based indirect tax on the supply of goods and services, in force since 1 July 2017. It is levied as CGST and SGST (or UTGST) on supplies within a state, and IGST on supplies between states and on imports.
Who has to register for GST?
Registration is generally required once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods, or ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services. Lower limits apply in certain special category states. Some suppliers, such as inter-state suppliers of goods and e-commerce operators, must register regardless of turnover.
How do I appeal against a GST order?
A first appeal lies to the Appellate Authority within three months of the order under Section 107 of the CGST Act, with a pre-deposit of 10 per cent of the disputed tax. A second appeal lies to the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), launched in September 2025, whose benches are being made functional in phases.
Who decides GST rates and policy?
The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister and including the state finance ministers, recommends rates, exemptions and procedural changes. These are then notified by the Central and State Governments.
