The CBI has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Karnataka government’s decision to withdraw consent for a probe into allegations of corruption against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The Karnataka High Court had earlier rejected the CBI’s petition, stating that the issue concerns a Centre-State dispute. The Supreme Court had issued notice in a related appeal by BJP leader Basanagouda R Patil Yatnal. The case dates back to 2019 when the BJP government in Karnataka granted CBI consent to investigate Shivakumar for disproportionate assets. The Congress government, which came to power in 2023, withdrew this consent. The CBI and Yatnal challenged this withdrawal, but the High Court rejected their petitions. The Supreme Court will now hear the appeal, which raises questions about the jurisdiction and authority of central agencies in state matters.
