Decide On Rehabilitation Of Piranana Chhapra Slum Dwellers In 6 Weeks: Gujarat High Court To Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
The Gujarat High Court directed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to decide within six weeks on the rehabilitation applications of hutment dwellers in Piranana Chhapra, Behrampura. The court emphasized that the AMC must pass reasoned orders after giving the dwellers a personal hearing. This order came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking protection for 57 slum dwellers facing eviction. The court noted that the eviction notices were issued without granting the benefits outlined in the 2010 Regulations for Rehabilitation and Redevelopment of Slums. The court ordered that until a decision is made, none of the dwellers should be evicted. The PIL highlighted that nine of the 57 dwellers could not be traced, and the remaining were required to file individual applications for rehabilitation. The court’s directive aims to ensure fair treatment and adherence to rehabilitation regulations for the affected slum dwellers.
