Govt Sets Up Panel To Review Copyright Law Amid Rise In AI-Related Disputes
The Indian government has formed a 12-member expert committee to review and modernize the Copyright Act, 1957 in response to emerging challenges from AI-generated content and digital technologies. Headed by a retired High Court judge, the panel will examine critical issues including AI training data usage, deepfake regulations, platform liabilities for user-generated content, and protection of traditional knowledge in digital formats. The review comes amid increasing copyright disputes involving generative AI tools and questions about fair use exceptions in the digital age. The committee has been tasked with submitting recommendations within six months to balance creator rights with technological innovation. Key focus areas include adapting the law for Web 3.0 applications, addressing AI authorship questions, and creating special provisions for protecting traditional knowledge. The review aims to position India's copyright framework at par with global standards while addressing unique domestic requirements in the creative and technology sectors. This initiative reflects the government's proactive approach to intellectual property regulation in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
