India lacks the ecosystem and skilled manpower to manufacture TV open cells domestically, continuing to rely heavily on China for this critical component. Open cells, accounting for 60-65% of TV costs, are primarily produced by Chinese companies like BOE Display and TCL CSOT, as well as Taiwanese firms Innolux and AUO. Videotex, a TV OEM company, highlights the challenges of skill development, ecosystem establishment, and technology upgrades as major barriers. Despite the government’s push for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ the investment-heavy nature of display manufacturing and rapid technological changes hinder local production. Videotex’s CEO, Arjun Bajaj, notes that while infrastructure improvements are underway, India still lags behind China. The company designs and manufactures TVs for various brands, including Reliance Industries’ BPL and Reconnect. The establishment of a domestic manufacturing ecosystem could open significant export opportunities, but requires comprehensive support from the government and favorable business policies1.
