Kerala court sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the 2020 Thenkurissi honour killing of Aneesh, a 27-year-old man. Aneesh, who belonged to a lower caste, was murdered by his father-in-law Prabhu Kumar and uncle-in-law Suresh for marrying Haritha, an upper-caste woman. The Additional Sessions Court in Palakkad found the accused guilty of murder, conspiracy, and evidence destruction. The court imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on each convict, to be given to Aneesh’s widow, Haritha. The murder, which occurred on December 25, 2020, involved the assailants attacking Aneesh with an iron rod and blade. Aneesh’s brother Arun witnessed the attack and provided crucial testimony. The court’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, with Haritha and Aneesh’s family expressing dissatisfaction, stating they expected a harsher sentence. They plan to appeal the verdict, seeking a double life term for the convicts to ensure they remain imprisoned for life.
