Frequently asked questions
- Who issues ISO certificates?
- Accredited certification bodies — ideally accredited by NABCB in India or another IAF member — not ISO itself and not consultants.
- How long is an ISO certificate valid?
- Usually three years, with surveillance audits every year and a recertification audit at the end of the cycle.
- How long does ISO certification take?
- Typically two to four months for a small or medium organisation, depending on readiness and the standard.
- Are all ISO standards certifiable?
- No. Standards such as ISO 31000, ISO 26000 and ISO 9000 are guidance documents and cannot be certified.
- Is ISO certification mandatory?
- Not by law in general, but many customers, tenders and regulators require or prefer it.
- What are Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits?
- Stage 1 checks documentation and readiness; Stage 2 checks that the system is implemented and effective before certification.
