Standard turnaround time

The FIR should be registered on the same day, or within 14 days if an enquiry is needed. The investigation then runs from a few months up to a year or more.

Government fees, timelines & key outcomes

No fee to file a police complaint or FIR.

The FIR should be registered promptly on receiving information of a cognizable offence; for offences punishable with three to seven years' imprisonment, the police may first hold a preliminary enquiry, to be completed within 14 days.

Key outcomes: a registered FIR leading to investigation and a charge-sheet or closure report, or escalation if the police refuse.

Forms & filings involved

An FIR needs no special form, just an oral or written complaint, or an e-FIR. Escalation goes by written complaint to the SP, then an application with an affidavit to the magistrate.

Documents required

Important conditions

An FIR is registered only for cognizable offences; non-cognizable matters are recorded separately and need the Magistrate's permission to investigate.

The complaint must be truthful — giving false information to the police is itself an offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Additional information

A zero FIR can be registered at any police station regardless of where the offence occurred, and is transferred to the station with jurisdiction.

The informant is entitled to a free copy of the FIR, and victims are entitled to information on the progress of the investigation under the BNSS.

The estimated cost covers indicative professional fees only. Government fees, stamp duty and taxes are payable at actuals.

How it works

  1. 1. Raise a service enquiry describing your requirement.
  2. 2. A Relationship Manager reviews it and opens it for bidding.
  3. 3. Pay into escrow and assign the professional you select.
  4. 4. Track progress to completion, then accept and release payment.
