Ableist Perspectives Must Be Abandoned For Equal Participation Of Persons With Disabilities: CJI DY Chandrachud
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted the need to abandon ableist perspectives for the equal participation of persons with disabilities. Speaking at the India Accessibility Summit, he emphasized that societal and institutional barriers, not individual impairments, create disabilities. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 focuses on removing these barriers. Chandrachud noted the positive impact of inclusive policies, such as CSR initiatives and the "Participatory Governance in Disability" policy in Karnataka. He also stressed the importance of addressing stigma around non-visible disabilities and ensuring accessibility in public life and the judiciary.
