Belagavi District Commission Holds Oriental Insurance Company Liable For Wrongful Repudiation Of Genuine Medical Claim
The Belagavi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held Oriental Insurance Company liable for denying a genuine medical claim. The complainant, who had an active Mediclaim policy, tested positive for COVID-19 and incurred expenses of Rs. 1,40,391 for treatment, plus Rs. 30,000 for medicines. Despite submitting all necessary documents, the insurance company refused reimbursement without valid reasons. The Commission directed the insurance company to pay Rs. 1,50,000 with 6% interest per annum, Rs. 5,000 for mental agony, and Rs. 2,000 for litigation costs.
