Bombay High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance Of “Bachchu Kadu” – Led Protest, Directs Clearance Of Highway
The Bombay High Court at its Nagpur seat took suo motu notice of severe traffic disruption caused by the protest led by veteran leader Bachchu Kadu and his supporters who blocked National Highway 44 (Wardha Road) demanding farm-loan waivers. The bench noted massive gridlock (over 20 km) affecting private vehicles, ambulances, police vehicles, Nagpur Airport access and the National Cancer Institute route. Emphasising the fundamental right of citizens to free movement, the Court directed Kadu and his supporters to immediately clear the site and authorised the police to take strict action if they failed to do so. While recognising the right to protest, the Court held that blocking a national highway without permission undermines public interest and essential services.
