CBI Uncovers ₹100 Cr GST Refund Scam Involving Senior Customs Officials and Fake Export Bills
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered a major GST refund scam that allegedly involves the connivance of senior customs officials. The scam was perpetrated through the use of fake export bills. The investigation has revealed that a syndicate, in collusion with the officials, was generating fraudulent shipping bills showing the export of goods that either did not exist or were of a much lower value. These fake bills were then used to fraudulently claim huge amounts of GST refunds from the government, as exports are zero-rated under the GST law. The CBI has initiated raids and is investigating the role of the customs officials who are suspected of facilitating this fraud. This case highlights the vulnerability of the GST refund system to organized fraud and the need for greater vigilance and inter-agency cooperation.
