Over two months into implementing the UT Excise Policy for FY 2024-25, Chandigarh's excise and taxation department has yet to establish the track and trace system aimed at curbing liquor smuggling. The system, which assigns unique QR and barcodes to each liquor bottle and case from production to retail, saw no bidders when first tendered on April 8.
A new tender has been issued, with a pre-bid meeting on June 19 and applications due by July 1. A similar plan in 2017 also failed. Smuggling persists due to Chandigarh's lower liquor costs compared to neighboring states.
