The outgoing Chief Justice of India, B. R. Gavai, has formally recommended his Supreme Court colleague, Surya Kant, as his successor, in line with the convention of appointing the senior-most judge. Justice Surya Kant is set to take oath as the 53rd CJI on November 24, 2025, becoming the first person from Haryana to hold the office.
