The Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the continued practice of dowry under the guise of customary gifts and issued comprehensive directions to strengthen enforcement of dowry prohibition laws. The Court observed that social acceptance of “gifts” often masks coercive demands that burden women and their families. Stressing that dowry remains a pervasive social evil, the Bench directed stricter scrutiny by law enforcement agencies, improved awareness measures, and sensitisation of investigating officers. The judgment reinforces the constitutional commitment to gender equality and dignity, calling for a more proactive approach to curb dowry-related offences and protect women from economic and social exploitation.
