Eicher Motors Exec Chairman Siddhartha Lal seeks Uniform 18% GST Across all Motorcycle CC Segments

Eicher Motors' Executive Chairman, Siddhartha Lal, has called for a uniform 18% GST rate for all motorcycle engine capacity segments. Lal argued that the current multi-tiered tax structure, which imposes a 28% tax on motorcycles above a certain engine capacity, is detrimental to the industry's growth. He believes that a uniform tax rate would not only simplify the tax structure but also encourage innovation and investment in the sector. He emphasized that motorcycles are not luxury goods and should be treated as essential modes of transport. The plea is timely, as the GST Council is expected to meet soon.
