An accountant in Panipat was robbed of Rs 29 lakh by two individuals posing as Goods and Services Tax (GST) officials. The incident occurred on the Panipat-Khatima highway when the accountant, Sukhnaam, was returning from Meerut with the cash in a car. The perpetrators, in a vehicle marked with "Indian Govt," intercepted the car, accused the accountant of GST fraud, and seized the money. They instructed the victims to proceed to the nearby police station and then fled the scene. This crime highlights a growing trend of criminals impersonating tax officials to extort money from unsuspecting individuals and businesses. The incident has prompted a police investigation involving authorities from both Panipat and the neighboring Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh. Such events underscore the need for public awareness and verification of the credentials of individuals claiming to be government officials to prevent similar fraudulent activities and financial losses.
