Garbage Tax: Bengaluru Collects ₹350 Crore in Just Two Months
Bengaluru's newly implemented solid waste management (SWM) fee, colloquially known as a "garbage tax," has resulted in a substantial revenue collection of Rs 350 crore in just the first two months of the fiscal year. This amount represents nearly half of the total projected annual revenue from this fee. The SWM fee has been integrated with the annual property tax bills, a move designed to streamline collection and ensure higher compliance rates. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city's municipal corporation, introduced this measure to create a dedicated funding stream for its extensive garbage collection and disposal operations. The impressive early collection figures indicate that this strategy has been effective. The funds are intended to improve the city's waste management infrastructure, leading to better sanitation and a cleaner urban environment for its residents.
