The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced that from August 1, 2025, it will bar the filing of GST returns that are older than three years. This new time limit is being implemented to improve data hygiene and to ensure that compliance is maintained in a more timely manner. After the deadline, taxpayers will not be able to file any pending GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, or other returns for the period preceding the three-year mark. The GSTN has issued an advisory urging all businesses to file any such pending returns before the cut-off date to avoid being locked out. This measure is expected to encourage businesses to clear their compliance backlogs, lead to a more accurate reflection of liabilities and credits in the system, and streamline the administration of the GST law by preventing the filing of extremely old and outdated returns.
