The Gujarat High Court upheld the conviction of a police constable found intoxicated while on duty, stressing that such behaviour gravely undermines public confidence and violates the ethical standards expected from law enforcement officers. The bench emphasised that a police officer’s conduct must reflect discipline, sobriety, and integrity, particularly during active duty hours. The court observed that indulgence in alcohol during service constitutes a serious dereliction of duty and moral lapse, compromising both public safety and institutional image. It rejected the plea for leniency, holding that law enforcement personnel are expected to maintain the highest standards of responsibility and vigilance, especially given the trust reposed in them by the public.
