Households benefited the most from GST Implementation, says Prime Minister
The Goods and Services Tax (GST), implemented on July 1, 2017, consolidated 17 local taxes and fees into a unified tax system, benefiting consumers through reduced prices on essential goods and services via rate rationalization. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted ongoing efforts to simplify compliance for GST assesses, aiming to ease financial burdens and enhance affordability for households. Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored GST's positive impact on the lives of 140 crore Indians, noting reduced taxes on household items like flour and cosmetics, leading to increased savings for the common man. GST has eliminated cascading taxes, creating a unified national market and boosting competitiveness of Indian products. However, delays in activating the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) have prolonged litigation in high courts, despite recent proposals by the GST Council for exemptions and interest waivers on tax demands.
