In May, domestic air passenger traffic grew by 5.1% year-on-year to an estimated 138.9 million, surpassing pre-Covid levels by around 14%, according to Icra. For FY24, domestic air passenger traffic reached around 154 million, with a 13% year-on-year growth, exceeding FY2020 levels. International passenger traffic for Indian carriers in FY24 stood at approximately 29.68 million, marking a 24% year-on-year growth. \r
Despite improved pricing power and higher yields over pre-Covid levels, further expansion in yields may be limited. Average ATF prices in FY24 were 58% higher than pre-Covid levels. While the industry expects gradual recovery in earnings due to high fixed costs, Icra anticipates a net loss of around Rs 30-40 billion in FY2025, significantly lower than the Rs 170-175 billion reported in FY2023.
