The Income Tax Department has unearthed a massive Rs 29,208 crore in undisclosed foreign assets. This discovery was made through the analysis of belated and revised income tax returns filed by taxpayers for the assessment year 2024-25. It appears that a number of individuals and entities, possibly prompted by the fear of being caught through the automatic exchange of information with other countries, have come forward to declare their previously hidden offshore assets and income in their updated returns. This is a major success for the department's efforts to combat black money and offshore tax evasion. The uncovering of such a large amount of undisclosed assets will lead to a significant recovery of tax revenue and will also serve as a strong deterrent to others who might be concealing their foreign income.
