The Central government has officially appointed Justice R Mahadevan as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, effective upon the retirement of Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala on May 23. Justice Mahadevan, a distinguished legal professional, obtained his law degree from Madras Law College and commenced his legal career by enrolling as a lawyer in 1989. \r
Over the span of 25 years, he specialized in civil, criminal, and writ matters, focusing particularly on indirect taxes, customs, and Central Excise issues. Notably, he served as the Additional Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Government of Tamil Nadu and held positions as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel for the Government of India at the Madras High Court, where he handled a substantial caseload exceeding 9,000 cases. \r
In recognition of his expertise and contribution to the legal field, he was elevated to the esteemed position of judge at the Madras High Court in 2013. With his vast experience and commendable track record, Justice Mahadevan assumes the role of Acting Chief Justice, poised to uphold the integrity and efficacy of the judiciary in the Madras High Court.
