The Supreme Court has temporarily halted directives issued by various states requiring shop owners and hawkers to display their names during the Kanwar Yatra season. The Court was responding to petitions arguing that such directives might discriminate against certain communities, particularly Muslims, and violate constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination. The Bench issued a notice to the states and prohibited the enforcement of the name-display requirement, while permitting the display of the type of food served. The matter will be reviewed again on July 26.
