The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) opposed the state government’s June 10 decision to extend the IT/ITeS sector’s exemption from the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act until 2029. The exemption includes IT, ITeS, startups, animation, gaming, telecom, and BPO industries. \r
KITU protested this in March 2024, urging an end to the exemption due to non-compliance by companies. Despite assurances, the government extended the exemption, affecting 20 lakh employees. KITU filed a writ petition against this decision. \r
The exemption, initially granted in 2014 and extended in 2019, includes conditions like forming committees for sexual harassment prevention and grievance redressal, and notifying labor authorities of disciplinary actions.
