The Karnataka government enforced the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence against Advocates Act, 2023 (KPVA Act) from June 10. Advocates, vulnerable to malicious prosecution hindering justice, prompted the law. Introduced by HK Patil on December 11, 2023, it passed on December 12, 2023, and received the Governor's assent on March 20, 2024. \r
Citing the UN Basic Principles on Lawyers' Role, the law ensures advocates' safety. Offenders may face 6 months to 3 years imprisonment or a ₹1 lakh fine. Police must inform advocates' association within 24 hours of arrest, and the court of Judicial Magistrate of First Class will try such offences.
