In a unanimous decision on June 24, the Kerala State Assembly passed a resolution urging the Central government to officially change the state's name from "Kerala" to "Keralam" in accordance with Malayalam language usage. The resolution emphasized historical assertions dating back to India's freedom struggle for a unified identity among Malayalam speakers. \r

Currently, the state is referred to as "Kerala" in the Constitution's First Schedule, prompting the assembly's call for amendment under Article 3 to reflect "Keralam." The resolution also seeks linguistic consistency across all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This marks the assembly's second attempt after the Central government returned their initial resolution with technical suggestions. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced and saw through the passage of this revised resolution.
