Madras High Court: Physical Education as Counter to “Couch Potato” Lifestyles Among Children
Madras High Court stressed the importance of physical activity in schools, criticizing increasing sedentary lifestyles among children driven by online gaming. The Court remarked that “active body leads to active mind,” urging that physical education or sports must be an integral part of school curriculum. It noted that physical health impacts mental well-being, concentration, character formation, and capacity to learn. Judges observed that mere academics and digital engagement cannot substitute for movement, play, discipline and social interaction. State and school authorities were directed to ensure compliance with the constitutional right to education which includes holistic development. The Court called for measures to promote physical activity, regulating online game usage during school hours, providing adequate facilities, trained teachers, and oversight to prevent adverse effects of sedentary habits among students.
