Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI head, believes that using publicly available content from the internet to train AI models is a long-standing practice of fair use. In a CNBC interview, he argued that the “social contract” since the ‘90s has been that online content is free to copy and recreate. Suleyman emphasized that unless a publisher explicitly requests not to have their content scraped, AI companies can use it for training models. This stance contrasts with recent lawsuits from eight American newspapers and the Center for Investigative Reporting, accusing Microsoft and OpenAI of unauthorized use of copyrighted articles for AI training.
