Mumbai Customs seizes Used Laptops, Computer Parts Worth ₹4 Crore from a UAE Consignment
The Customs department seized 4,600 used laptops and over 1,000 computer parts valued at ₹4.11 crore in Nhava Sheva, originating from the UAE.
The Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch (SIIB) confiscated the electronics, including laptops and 1,546 CPUs, imported by a Hong Kong-based supplier. Importing such goods without proper authorization violates the DGFT policy. In January, DGFT clarified that desktop computers can be freely imported, unlike laptops and tablets.
Used laptops were smuggled by falsely declaring them as motherboard casings at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Patparganj, Delhi. Simultaneous searches in Mumbai and Delhi led to the arrest of the mastermind, with ₹27.37 lakh in cash recovered. Further investigation revealed similar shipments at Delhi Air Cargo Customs.
