The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has refused to grant a stay on an order issued by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against UFO Moviez and Qube Cinema Technologies. The CCI had found these companies guilty of anti-competitive practices, specifically for imposing exclusive content and service agreements on cinema theatre owners, which stifled competition in the digital cinema distribution market. UFO Moviez had appealed to the NCLAT, seeking a stay on the CCI's order. However, the appellate tribunal, after hearing the initial arguments, did not find sufficient grounds to grant an immediate stay. This means that the CCI's order, which may include penalties and directives to cease and desist from anti-competitive behavior, will remain in effect while the NCLAT proceeds to hear the full appeal on its merits.
