The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Union labour secretary to submit a detailed report within seven days regarding allegations of "anti-labour practices" at an Amazon warehouse in Manesar, Haryana. \r
Media reports highlighted issues such as workers being denied washroom breaks for hours, lack of safety gear, and strenuous working conditions violating labour laws. While an Amazon spokesperson refuted these allegations, NHRC's statement emphasized concerns over human rights violations and non-compliance with labour guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment. \r
The commission underscored the government's initiatives aimed at improving workers' welfare, including minimum wage enforcement, social security schemes, and enhanced maternity benefits under the Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017.
