No Clinching Material To Show Exact Birth Date Of Thiruvalluvar: Madras High Court Declines To Interfere With Govt Holiday
The Madras High Court dismissed a plea challenging the Tamil Nadu government’s policy of celebrating Thiruvalluvar’s birthday on the 2nd day of Thai. The petitioner argued that Thiruvalluvar’s birthday should be celebrated on the Tamil star “Anusham” in the month of Vaikasi, as it has been traditionally observed for over 600 years. The court, however, noted the lack of concrete evidence to determine Thiruvalluvar’s exact birth date and upheld the government’s decision. The court emphasized that the celebration was meant to honor Thiruvalluvar’s greatness and not specifically his birthday. The petitioner also claimed that the government’s policy violated customary practices and fundamental rights, but the court found no merit in these arguments.
