The Punjab & Haryana High Court expressed concern over trial courts relying on unverified, unauthenticated, or incorrect legal precedents. Observing recurring errors in citations presented during trials, the Court emphasized mandatory training to ensure judicial officers rely strictly on authoritative sources—official reporters, authenticated online databases, and recognised law journals. The Bench highlighted that inaccurate precedents compromise justice, lead to flawed reasoning, and create confusion in legal interpretation. The decision underscores the importance of legal literacy, updated training modules, and sensitization programmes within the judicial system. It also calls upon Bar associations to assist by ensuring responsible citation practices. The order reflects an effort to elevate judicial discipline and maintain doctrinal purity, particularly at the trial level where factual and legal determinations form the backbone of the justice delivery system.
