Piece Of Glass Found Inside Kingfisher Beer, Palakkad District Commission Holds United Breweries Limited Liable
In a recent judgment by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Palakkad (Kerala), United Breweries Limited was found liable for selling Kingfisher beer containing a piece of glass. The complainant purchased the beer from a Kerala State Beverages outlet and discovered the foreign object upon inspection. Despite United Breweries' defense of stringent bottling procedures and hinting at possible tampering, the Commission observed the intact bottle cap and confirmed negligence in the bottling process.\r
However, due to lack of evidence regarding the seller's identity, the complaint against Kerala State Beverages was dismissed. The Commission ordered United Breweries to reimburse the beer's cost of Rs. 140 with interest, along with Rs. 10,000 as compensation for deficient service and Rs. 2,500 towards litigation costs. The case underscores consumer rights protection under the Consumer Protection Act.
