Punjab and Haryana High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Lawyer's Alleged Role in Courtroom Violence and Defamatory Social Media Posts
The Punjab and Haryana High Court initiated suo motu proceedings following a letter from the High Court Bar Association's Secretary, accusing Advocate Ravneet Kaur of instigating a violent attack on fellow lawyers within the court premises and posting sexually explicit content on social media. The incident, involving Advocate Simranjit Singh Blassi, allegedly occurred on September 17. The Court directed that no action be taken against any Bar member named in an FIR until the proceedings are concluded. It also impleaded the UT administration and Chandigarh DGP, directing them to file a reply. The HCBA Secretary sought the registration of an FIR against Kaur for defamation and her arrest in connection with the violent incident. The Court's intervention underscores its commitment to maintaining decorum within judicial institutions and ensuring accountability for actions that undermine the legal profession's integrity.
