Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to advocate for Goods and Services Tax (GST) relief for defence-related startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The proposal aims to foster innovation and self-reliance ('Aatmanirbharta') in India's defence manufacturing sector. The key request is to provide these smaller entities with exemptions or lower GST rates on the procurement of raw materials and the supply of finished goods. Currently, high GST rates can create significant working capital challenges for startups and MSMEs, hindering their ability to compete and innovate. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to create a more supportive ecosystem for domestic defence production. If approved, the GST relief could level the playing field, encourage more entrepreneurs to enter the defence sector, and ultimately reduce India's dependence on imported military hardware.
