The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reports that ₹6,099 crore worth of ₹2000 notes remained in circulation as of June 30, 2025. This figure represents a mere 1.71% of the notes initially in circulation when their withdrawal was announced in May 2023, indicating a successful demonetization drive. While the majority (98.29%) have been returned to the banking system, the outstanding notes still retain their legal tender status. Although the facility for exchange and deposit at bank branches concluded in October 2023, individuals can still exchange these notes at the RBI's 19 issue offices or send them via India Post for direct credit to their bank accounts, ensuring a seamless process for the remaining currency.
