Relaxation for Ship Imports: RBI Permits Advance Remittance up to USD 50 Million Without Bank Guarantee
In a significant move to facilitate large-scale imports, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has relaxed the norms for making advance remittances for the import of ships, vessels, and aircrafts. The RBI has now permitted authorized dealer banks to allow advance remittances of up to USD 50 million without the need for a bank guarantee or a standby letter of credit. This is a substantial increase from the previous, more restrictive limits. This relaxation is aimed at reducing the transaction costs and compliance burden for companies involved in these high-value capital goods imports. By removing the requirement for a bank guarantee for such a large amount, the RBI is streamlining the import process, promoting ease of doing business, and providing a major boost to the shipping and aviation sectors by making it easier for them to finance their fleet acquisition and expansion plans.
