Nobel laureate Amartya Sen criticized the replacement of the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), calling it not a 'welcome change' due to the lack of consultation with all stakeholders. Sen emphasized the diverse issues faced by different Indian states and the absence of wide-ranging talks before enacting the BNS. The new laws, including Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BNA), were passed by Parliament in December and took effect on July 1, replacing colonial-era legislation.
