Scrap new rules on self-certification of ads, IAMAI urges Supreme Court
The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has petitioned the Supreme Court to reconsider new advertising regulations mandating self-declaration certificates before placing ads across TV, print, or online platforms. IAMAI, representing around 600 members from startups to multinational firms, expressed concerns that the rules, aimed at curbing misleading ads, could severely disrupt the digital economy. \r
They argued that the requirement would impede the agility of online advertising, crucial for real-time performance tracking and effective audience targeting. IAMAI proposed that existing laws like the Information Technology Act and Consumer Protection Rules could address misleading ads adequately with stronger enforcement. \r
Highlighting the pivotal role of digital ads in economic recovery, IAMAI stressed the impact on small and mid-sized enterprises heavily reliant on online advertising for revenue generation.
