Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos have become major hotspots for cybercrimes, with nearly 48% of financial frauds in India originating from these regions, according to The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). Rajesh Kumar, CEO of I4C, highlighted a rise in organized cybercrimes, with Indians both knowingly and unknowingly participating from scam compounds abroad. These compounds offer cybercrime-as-a-service and money laundering. \r
Recently, 60 Indian nationals were rescued from a suspected scam compound in Cambodia, with around 420 repatriated so far. Common scams include digital arrest, trading, investment frauds, and dating scams, often advertised through Meta and Google, primarily from Hong Kong. Scammers also use algorithmic manipulation in fake gaming apps. Exploiting gaps in KYC processes, money-mule bank accounts are used to channel illicit proceeds. \r
In response, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal received over 100,000 complaints in 2023, leading to 10,000 FIRs. A high-level inter-ministerial committee is tackling the issue, blocking 3.25 lakh mule accounts and over 3000 URLs and 595 apps in recent months. More than 1000 cybercriminals have been arrested, and 5.3 lakh SIM cards and 80,848 IMEI numbers revoked. I4C is collaborating with tech giants for technological solutions and anticipates stricter punishments under the Bharatiya Jnana Samhita will help curb organized cybercrimes.
