The Supreme Court criticised the CBI for appearing “unusually friendly” to the accused in the Sammaan Capital fraud case, expressing concern that investigative neutrality seemed compromised. The case involves large-scale investor fraud running into hundreds of crores. The Court noted inconsistencies in the pace, direction, and seriousness of the investigation, suggesting that such conduct cast doubt on the CBI’s independence. It hinted at forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure credibility. The alleged fraud had left numerous investors financially devastated, and the Court stressed that economic offences require strict, impartial handling. Emphasizing that investigative agencies must inspire public confidence, the bench observed that laxity or bias—even in appearance—undermines the rule of law.
