India's MSME sector, employing a quarter of the nation's workforce, faces significant hurdles in its growth trajectory, primarily stemming from financial constraints exacerbated by delayed payments. Large corporations often normalize delayed payments to MSMEs, leaving them financially strained and impeding their expansion plans.
The Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship's report highlighted that ₹10.7 lakh crore in payments were overdue to MSMEs in 2021, equating to 7.8% of India's GDP. Despite government initiatives like the Samadhaan portal and legislative amendments such as the 45-day rule under the Income Tax Act, challenges persist.
Critics within the MSME community view these measures as restrictive, yet proponents argue they ensure fair treatment. Ultimately, fostering a culture of timely payments among corporations is crucial for MSMEs to thrive, enhance productivity, and bolster India's economic resilience through mass entrepreneurship and job creation.
