Turning CAs into Whistleblowers: ICAI’s Proposal to SEBI for Tackling Corporate Fraud
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has proposed to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) that Chartered Accountants (CAs) be formally recognized as whistleblowers in the fight against corporate fraud. This initiative aims to leverage the unique position of CAs and auditors, who often have early access to information about financial irregularities. The ICAI believes that a structured mechanism for CAs to report suspicious activities can lead to quicker detection and prevention of frauds, thereby protecting the interests of shareholders and maintaining market integrity. While CAs have informally acted as whistleblowers in the past, this proposal seeks to formalize their role and provide them with the necessary legal protection and incentives. The proposal is currently under discussion with SEBI, and if implemented, it could significantly enhance corporate governance and transparency in India.
