Service overview

FSSAI registration or licensing is mandatory for every food business operator in India under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 — manufacturers, processors, traders, restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers, storage providers and online food sellers.

Which tier applies depends on turnover and activity, and the application is made on the FoSCoS portal.

Who needs it? / When is it needed?

  • Any food business operator — manufacturer, processor, packer, trader, distributor, restaurant, caterer, cloud kitchen, storage provider, importer or e-commerce seller
  • New businesses before they start selling food
  • Existing businesses whose turnover or activity has moved them into a higher tier

What to expect from the WCP Professionals

  • Tier assessment: basic registration, State licence or Central licence, based on turnover and kind of business
  • Application on the FoSCoS portal with the correct food categories
  • Food Safety Management System plan and supporting documents where a licence is needed
  • Coordination of any inspection by the food safety officer
  • Reminders for annual returns and renewals

Key deliverables

  • FSSAI registration certificate or licence with its 14-digit number
  • Food categories correctly listed on the licence
  • Compliance checklist for display, labelling and annual returns

Standard turnaround time

  • Basic registration: usually about 7 days after a complete application
  • State or Central licence: typically 30–60 days, as inspection may be required

Government fees, timelines & key outcomes

  • Government fees per year:
  • Basic registration (Form A): ₹100

Important conditions

The FSSAI number must be displayed at the premises and printed on food labels.

Operating without registration or a licence is punishable under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and a business must move to a higher tier when its turnover or activity requires it.

Additional information

From 1 April 2026, FSSAI registrations and licences granted under the revised regulations are reported as valid without a fixed expiry, subject to annual compliance; existing ones follow their stated validity until renewed.

E-commerce food sellers and cloud kitchens need their own FSSAI registration in addition to the platform's.

The estimated cost covers indicative professional fees only. Government fees, stamp duty and taxes are payable at actuals.
