Service overview

The Import Export Code is a 10-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that every business needs to import or export goods, and that service exporters need to claim export benefits.

The IEC is linked to the business PAN and must be confirmed or updated on the DGFT portal every year.

Who needs it? / When is it needed?

  • Businesses importing or exporting goods
  • Service exporters claiming export benefits or asked for an IEC by their bank
  • E-commerce sellers shipping internationally
  • IEC holders whose code has been deactivated for missing the annual update

What to expect from the WCP Professionals

  • Application on the DGFT portal with PAN, bank and address details
  • Payment of the DGFT fee and issue of the e-IEC
  • Annual updation between April and June each year
  • Reactivation of a deactivated IEC and updating changed details

Key deliverables

  • e-IEC certificate from DGFT
  • Annual updation confirmation
  • Note on next steps such as AD code registration with customs

Standard turnaround time

Usually 1–3 working days after a complete application.

Government fees, timelines & key outcomes

DGFT fee of ₹500 for a fresh IEC.

The annual updation, due between 1 April and 30 June every year even if nothing has changed, carries no fee for a no-change confirmation; a missed updation deactivates the IEC until it is updated.

Key outcomes: an active IEC that customs, banks and export schemes accept.

Forms & filings involved

  • IEC application on the DGFT portal (ANF 2A)
  • Annual IEC updation / confirmation between April and June
  • Modification of IEC details when the business changes

Documents required

  • PAN of the business
  • Address proof of the business premises
  • Cancelled cheque or bank certificate
  • Aadhaar or DSC of the applicant for verification

What we need from you

  • Business PAN and registered address
  • Bank account details in the business's name
  • Mobile and email for OTP verification

Important conditions

An IEC is issued against a PAN; only one IEC is allowed per PAN.

The IEC is deactivated automatically if the annual updation is not done between April and June, and shipments can be held until it is reactivated.

Additional information

Exporters of goods also register their AD code with customs at each port, and may need RCMC registration with an export promotion council to claim scheme benefits.

The estimated cost covers indicative professional fees only. Government fees, stamp duty and taxes are payable at actuals.
