Government fees, timelines & key outcomes

No government fee for filing a return.

  • Filing after the due date attracts a late fee under Section 234F of ₹5,000, or ₹1,000 where total income does not exceed ₹5 lakh, and interest at 1% a month under Section 234A on any unpaid tax
  • A belated return can be filed up to 31 December of the assessment year

Key outcomes: a correct, verified return, refunds claimed and losses preserved for carry-forward.

Forms & filings involved

  • ITR-1 (Sahaj) to ITR-7, chosen by taxpayer type and income
  • Tax audit report in Form 3CA/3CB with 3CD, where an audit applies
  • E-verification by Aadhaar OTP, net banking or DSC within 30 days of filing

Returns for FY 2025-26 use the forms under the Income-tax Act, 1961; from tax year 2026-27 the forms notified under the Income-tax Rules, 2026 apply.

Documents required

  • Form 16 (for salaried) or P&L and Balance Sheet (for business owners)
  • Form 26AS, AIS, and TIS statements
  • Bank account statements, investment proofs, and home loan interest certificate

What we need from you

  • Furnish clean financial records, income proofs, and bank statements before filing deadlines.
  • Complete electronic verification (OTP) promptly when triggered.

Important conditions

Delayed filing beyond statutory due dates attracts late fees, interest liabilities, and loss of carry-forward benefits.

Omission of foreign assets or income disclosures can attract severe regulatory penalties.

Additional information

Due dates are notified for each year and differ by taxpayer type — non-audit individuals, audit cases and transfer-pricing cases each have their own date — so the applicable date is confirmed before filing.

From income earned on or after 1 April 2026, the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies, with renumbered sections and a single 'tax year' in place of the previous year and assessment year.

The estimated cost covers indicative professional fees only. Government fees, stamp duty and taxes are payable at actuals.

How it works

  1. 1. Raise a service enquiry describing your requirement.
  2. 2. A Relationship Manager reviews it and opens it for bidding.
  3. 3. Pay into escrow and assign the professional you select.
  4. 4. Track progress to completion, then accept and release payment.

Frequently asked questions

Which ITR form should I use?

Broadly, ITR-1 for salaried residents with simple income up to ₹50 lakh, ITR-2 for capital gains or foreign assets, ITR-3 for business or professional income, ITR-4 for presumptive income, and ITR-5 to ITR-7 for firms, companies and trusts.

What is AIS and why does it matter?

The Annual Information Statement shows income and transactions reported to the department. Income in AIS that is missing from your return commonly triggers notices, so the two are reconciled before filing.

Do I need to verify my return after filing?

Yes. A return must be e-verified within 30 days of filing, otherwise it is treated as filed on the date of verification, or as not filed.

Can I file my return after the due date?

Yes, as a belated return up to 31 December, with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 and interest on any tax due; some losses cannot be carried forward in a belated return.
