The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), responsible for selecting directors for state-owned banks and financial institutions, has unexpectedly postponed the scheduled interview to choose a new State Bank of India (SBI) chairman. The deferral occurred just hours before the planned interview, with the exact reasons for the delay remaining unclear. Sources indicate that the interview will be rescheduled after the formation of the new government post-June 4. \r
The selection process aims to find a successor for Dinesh Khara, the current chairman, who will retire on August 28 upon reaching the age limit of 63. Traditionally, the SBI chairman is chosen from the pool of serving managing directors at the bank. The FSIB, led by Bhanu Pratap Sharma, former Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), will recommend a candidate, with the final appointment being made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister. \r
The government-appointed selection panel includes the Financial Services Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises Secretary, and an RBI Deputy Governor. Additional FSIB members are Animesh Chauhan, former Chairman and MD of the erstwhile Oriental Bank of Commerce, former RBI Executive Director Deepak Singhal, and Shailendra Bhandari, former MD of the erstwhile ING Vysya Bank.
